Schrodinger's World

Physicists Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg wrote that, on the scale of atoms and smaller, the properties of physical systems remain undefined until they are measured. Light, for example, can behave as a particle or a wave. But until someone observes it to be one or the other, it exists in a state of quantum superposition: It is both a particle and a wave at the same time. Physicist Erwin Schrodinger illustrated this with a cat. He created an experiment in which the decay of a radioactive element would trigger toxic gas to be released in a steel chamber with a cat inside. By the rules of quantum mechanics, until someone opened the chamber, the cat existed in a state of superposition: simultaneously alive and dead. Stating that every possibility exists in a giant collection of parallel realities. In some, the cat lives. In others, it does not. When you open the box to observe, the cat abruptly changes its quantum state randomly, forcing it to be either dead or alive. Adapting the same principle, I have interpreted this experiment as a play on humanity. Greed is a toxic trait that we human beings have embedded in ourselves. When the boxes are closed. Assumption: Our mind simultaneously has the kindness to better the environment but also the greed to cause its destruction. Therefore, right now we are in a state of growth and decay at the same time, simultaneously dead and alive, fighting battles in our head and with the world, continuously fighting for survival. Conclusion; Realisation that currently we are simultaneously alive and dead and our future is not defined yet. The two main futures that we need to understand is that we could be responsible for the death of the world. Either we will overpower the greed within ourselves and flourish or greed will overpower us and lead us in a state of turmoil. This display should cause you to introspect on yourselves and take action for a brighter future. It is up to our empathy, helpfulness, and intelligence to lead us to prosperity.

About the Artist

Juhi Idnani, an 18 year old girl studying in the cathedral and John Connon School Mumbai, is kindhearted and intelligent. She always places others’ needs ahead of hers. Taking the intimidating combination of physics, chemistry and math, she tinkles the creative side of her mind through art. She aspires to be an architect by combining her love for art with her passion for physics and math. Her academic excellence does not come at the cost of sitting at home all day. She is a state level athlete and regional level basketball player. She can only handle all these activities by meticulously planning her day in her colourful calendar. Hoping to make a difference in the world she strives to raise awareness for various causes close to her heart.
